Events

Do you host or manage events that you want to easily be able to tell your website visitors about?  This app is for you – our fully integrated events calendar app enables you to list all your events and schedule in their times, and have them display in both calendars on your website, or list views.

Your Events App can display your events in six different views...

One view is your full calendar view, which shows a large calendar with your events listed.  When your visitors hover over an event, it will show the description and a link to your event’s page.

Another view is a small calendar view, ideal for sidebars.

The other views are list views, which display your events in a list, rather than on a calendar.  We’ve setup special views to show events going on Today, This Week, and we’ve even got a view that will display past events.

The app is very easy to use, and you can use it in as many different places as you’d like.  For example, you can have a small calendar and an ‘events coming up this week’ list on your homepage, and a full sized calendar on your events page.

This app works great with our Form Builder with Credit Card Payment App to take online bookings for events, using PayPal to process credit card payment.

Adding Events

To add an event, simply go to your dashboard, click ‘Events’ and then click ‘Add’.  First, give your event a title.  Try to keep this under 20 characters – if it’s more than 20 characters, the title won’t fit on the full calendar due to space constraints.  If you’d like to categorise your event, click ‘add another option’ and type in the name of a category.   Most people just leave this blank, however.

You also have the option of colourising your event on a calendar.  This isn’t necessary either, but handy if you want to colour code your events shown on your calendar.  Most people just leave this option blank as well.

Next, you’ll find the tickbox ‘Hide Link to This Event’s Page?’.  Basically, each new event creates an event page.  Sometimes, you may not have a lot to say about an event.  If this is the case, and you’d rather just show the event on your calendar or event list, tick this box.  The link to this event’s page will be hidden.

Next, add a date.  You can also set a start and end time here.  If it’s an all-day event, check the box.

If you’d like the event to be a recurring event, choose daily, weekly or monthly.  If you’d like the recurring event to end on a particular date, enter that date here.

Next, type in your event description.  This should be a brief description.  It will display on the event summaries, or when your website visitors hover over a calendar link.

Next, type in your event content.  This will be the content that will be displayed on the event’s page.  This should be a more detailed description.  Keep in mind, if you’ve ticked the box ‘Hide Link to This Event’s Page’, you don’t need to type anything in here because your visitors won’t be going to your event’s page.

Next, click the ‘links’ tab.  Your event also has the option of adding a location, address, contact name or contact email.  It’s not necessary, but if you’d like to add this information to the event, type it in here.

When you’re done, click on ‘Add Event Entry’, and your event will be created.

Displaying Events

The events app is very flexible.  You’ve got the option of displaying your events in calendar views, or list views.  First, just navigate to a place on your website where you’d like to display your events, and go into edit mode.  Click ‘add to’ below the area of your site where you want to show your events, click ‘add block’, then select ‘events’.

First, give your events block a name.  It can be called anything you’d like, just make it meaningful to you.  If you’ve created categories, you can tick the categories for the events that you’d like to show up.  If you want to list all your categories, just have ‘all categories’ selected.

You can display as many or as few events on this block as you’d like.  Change this number if you’d like to, and if you’ve got lots of events, you want to tick the box that will show next/previous links tickbox.

To add the events block, just click add.  To edit this at any time, just click on the block at any time and click ‘edit’.

Views

Now that you’ve added the block, you’ve now got the option of choosing your block view.  You’ve got the option of adding a list view, or a calendar view.

To choose, simply click on the block, and select ‘block style templates’.  Simply select the view you’d like.  For list views, you can choose between ‘Today’ (which will display the events happening today), ‘This Week List’ (which displays events of this week), and so on.  Just choose what’s right for you.

For calendars, you’ve got the option of adding a Full Calendar, or a Small Calendar.  Small calendars are ideal for sidebars – lots of people use these views on their homepage.  Full Calendars are great if you have an events page where you’d like a more detailed calendar view.

Of course, you can move the blocks wherever you’d like by clicking on the block, clicking ‘move’, and dragging it where you’d like it to go.

Editing Events

Of course, you can edit an event at any time.  Just go to the dashboard, and click ‘Event’s.  This will list all of your events that you’ve posted.  Click on the ‘edit’ icon if you’d like to edit it, the ‘duplicate’ button if you’d like to duplicate, or the ‘delete’ icon if you want to delete it.

Creating an event creates a page for that events.  You may also want to edit that page.  Doing so is easy.  Just simply click on the event name, and that will take you to that event’s page.  Here, you can treat the event page just like a normal shift page, and customise it however you’d like.

Just bear in mind, if you’d ticked the box ‘Hide Link to This Event’s Page?’ when you were creating the event, your visitors won’t be able to access your event page from the calendar or list view.

Adding Event Registration

A lot of clients want to have their visitors register for a particular event, and charge them via credit card.  If this sounds like you, if you haven’t already, get the ‘Forms with PayPal Payment’ app.  You can do so by clicking the ‘get apps’ button, and purchasing it from the apps marketplace.

That app would let you set up a registration form you can use to charge people for attending an event.  All you’d do, is simply navigate to the event page you’d like people to register, and add a ‘Form with PayPal Payment’ block.

For a full tutorial on how to work that block, click the video tutorial link within the app.  Remember, if you’d like to purchase the app, you can do so now through the apps marketplace.
